About Friends of Malton

Cherishing Our Past, Building Our Future.

To understand where we are going, you have to understand where we came from. Friends of Malton is more than just a nonprofit organization—we are the living testament to a legacy that began nearly five decades ago. We are alumni, stewards, and spiritual successors of the Malton Church of God, carrying forward a mission of faith, service, and community transformation that has defined this congregation since its small humble beginnings in 1973.

Years of Legacy

Built on a Foundation of Faith

For over 50 years, the people of the Malton Church of God have been the heartbeat of this mission. From the pioneers who planted the seed in 1973 to the volunteers who serve today, we are a family united by faith and purpose.

1973

Where It All Began

Brother Beresford and Sister Sybil Somerville planted the seed of faith in their Malton home. What started as a small prayer group in a basement became one of the most vibrant congregations in the Church of God fellowship.

1977

A Church on Fire

Under the leadership of Pastor Huel O. Wilson and First Lady Clementina Wilson, the congregation at Darcel Public School experienced extraordinary growth — running three buses and filling every seat.

2023

The Torch Passes On

Fourteen alumni gathered to form Friends of Malton — not out of nostalgia, but out of obedience. They honoured the legacy of Bishop Wilson and launched a movement to carry the mission of service and fellowship into the next generation.

“Our strength isn't in our buildings or our budgets — it's in the people who say ‘yes’ to serving their neighbours with compassion and excellence.”

Our Mission (Present)

With This Commitment We Can Make The Community Better

Our mission is simple yet profound: to use our talent for the glory of God to impact our community, socially, economically, and spiritually.

We believe that we aren't meant to solve the world's problems through human effort alone. We rely on the dunamis—the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit. This means we pray for wisdom before making strategic decisions, and we remain open to divine interruptions—those moments where we feel led to help someone in a way we hadn't originally planned.

As a faith-driven organization with Pentecostal roots, we approach every individual as a whole being: body, soul, and spirit. True success isn't just a full stomach; it's a restored life and a sense of God-given purpose. Whether we are referring families to food banks, mentoring young entrepreneurs, or gathering for fellowship and prayer, we do it all with radical expectancy—believing that breakthrough is always possible. We are the keepers of a 50-year flame.

While we operate as a separate nonprofit, our DNA is Pentecostal. The values of service, the culture of prayer, and the commitment to the Malton community that we learned in the pews of the Church of God are the same values that guide our decisions today.

The FOM Project Planning Process

How we turn vision into impact—one intentional step at a time.

01

Set a Theme

Our projects are guided by one of our four ministry pillars: Social Activities & Events, Business & Education, Spiritual Activities, or Food Bank Program. We select a theme that aligns with the specific needs of our community and the season we are in.

02

Select a Budget

Every project begins with faithful stewardship. We view every dollar as "holy seed," ensuring that our resources are allocated with integrity and purpose. We assess the scope of each initiative and establish a clear budget that reflects both our financial capacity and our commitment to transparency.

03

Choose Venue

Location matters. We carefully select venues that are accessible, welcoming, and reflective of the dignity we wish to extend to every participant. Our goal is to create an environment where the lonely find a seat at the table and the weary find rest.

04

Promote Event

We believe that the message is only as powerful as its reach. Using our digital platforms, social media channels, and grassroots networks, we spread the word about upcoming projects and events. Promotion isn't just marketing--it's an invitation to partnership, fellowship, and collective impact.

It's so challenging to find a good team to do great things. But we can provide you the best one.

For over 50 years, the people of Malton have been the heartbeat of this mission.

From the pioneers (Our Founders Beresford and Sybil Somerville) who planted the seed in 1973 to the volunteers who serve today, we are a family united by faith and purpose. Our strength isn't in our buildings or our budgets—it's in the people who say "yes" to serving their neighbors with compassion and excellence.
